Pellets or briquettes – which should you choose?

Wood pellets and briquettes are both compressed wood fuels, but they are not interchangeable in every heating appliance. Start with the appliance manual rather than choosing only by the displayed pack or pallet price.

Check the appliance first

Pellets are used in pellet boilers and stoves with feed systems designed for a specified pellet diameter. Briquettes are normally loaded manually and should be used only where the appliance manufacturer permits them. If the manual is unclear, confirm the fuel requirements before ordering.

Compare equivalent quantities

A pallet price alone is not enough. For pellets, confirm bag weight, bag count and total net weight. For briquettes, check pack weight and total order weight. Add delivery to your address and compare the final cost for an equivalent amount of fuel.

Storage and convenience

Both fuels need dry storage. Moisture can cause pellets to swell and break down, while briquette packs also need protection from damp conditions. Pellet systems may offer more automatic feeding; briquettes are usually handled and loaded manually.
